## Engineering marvel: Crossing Tanggula Pass at 5,072 meters

Opened in 2006, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is an engineering wonder built across continuous alpine permafrost. The journey from Xining to Lhasa covers 1,956 km in roughly 21 hours. As the train crosses the Kunlun mountain range and enters the remote Hoh Xil nature reserve, passengers frequently spot Tibetan antelopes (chiru), wild yaks, and Tibetan wild asses (kiang).

The railway peaks at Tanggula Pass at an astounding 5,072 meters (16,640 feet)—making it the highest railway pass on Earth. Because atmospheric pressure at 5,000m would cause severe hypoxia, the train's environmental control system pressurizes passenger cars and pumps oxygen into the air ducts once passing Golmud (2,800m). Individual oxygen supply nozzles are located beside every passenger bunk.

- Wildlife spotting: Crosses the pristine Hoh Xil plateau where Tibetan antelopes and wild yaks roam.

- Oxygen pressurization: Ambient oxygen is automatically pumped into carriage ventilation above Golmud.

- Individual oxygen outlets: Located beside every bunk; disposable plastic tubes provided free by train attendants.

## Sleeper cabin classes: Soft sleeper vs hard sleeper comparison

International travelers choose between two sleeper classes. The Soft Sleeper (First Class) features 4 comfortable, wide berths (2 upper, 2 lower) inside a private, lockable cabin with a sliding door. It offers quiet privacy, individual reading lamps, personal TV monitors, luggage storage under the lower berths, and a standard 220V charging outlet.

The Hard Sleeper (Second Class) consists of open-plan compartments with 6 berths (2 lower, 2 middle, 2 upper) opening directly onto the communal aisle. There are no doors, headroom in middle and upper berths is restricted, and ambient noise from other travelers is continuous. While culturally authentic and budget-friendly, the Soft Sleeper is strongly recommended for a restful 24-to-40-hour journey.

- Soft Sleeper: 4 berths per private lockable cabin, quiet privacy, spacious luggage room, lockable door.

- Hard Sleeper: 6 berths per open-plan bay without doors, limited headroom on upper bunks, noisy aisle.

- Onboard dining: Dining car serves freshly prepared Chinese stir-fry dishes, soups, and hot rice meals.

- Booking window: Tickets release 15–30 days in advance and sell out in seconds during summer peak season.
